Dressing
By Peter Lundgren, The Farmer
The soil was a bit dry and dusty on the chosen sowing day but there was moisture at seed depth. It’s raining now so hopefully the seed will germinate evenly and get a good start before the winter weather closes in.
The seed is dressed with a chemical called Kinto that gives protection against seed and soil borne disease – what we call single purpose dressing – and also a separate manganese dressing. This peaty land has a very high organic content – so high that it can catch light and burn when it’s dry – but the high organic content locks up some micronutrients so we have to supplement those locked up micronutrients with seed dressings and spray applications through the growing year.
